چکیده

A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical path-based Internet protocol (IP) backbone network is proposed as a cost-effective way of realizing robust IP-over-photonic systems. The WDM optical path is based on WDM transmission and wavelength routing. Between end-to-end IP backbone routers, the WDM optical path, a fat and robust optical pipe, is defined across photonic transport systems (PTS’s). Tera-bit class PTS’s will be required for the future IP backbone network and this level of performance is achievable. Optical layer routing is done at intermediate nodes, so the electrical packet-bypacket routing required by existing systems is eliminated. An optical signal format that permits cost-effective IP packet transmission is presented. WDM optical paths directly accommodate the IP packets via layer-2 frames. The cost-effectiveness of the proposed system, especially for heavy traffic, is demonstrated from the viewpoint of the overall network traffic transport capability and network node cost. The proposed system is as robust as existing systems; e.g. fault/degradation localization mechanism and optical layer network protection one are implemented. Thus the proposed IP-over-photonic system will create cost-effective and robust IP backbone networks. key words: optical communication, optical path, Internet protocol

Optical Burst Switching: A Viable Solution for Terabit IP Backbone

Wavelength-division multiplexing has emerged as an important physical layer technology. Optical transmission provides a physical layer capable of carrying bits at the speed of the order of a gigabit per second. Optical burst switching is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of conventional WDM deployment, such as lack of fine bandwidth granularity in wavelength routing and electronic speed bot...

Impact of Segments Aggregation on TCP Reno Flows in Optical Burst Switching Networks

In this paper we study the Optical Burst Switching (OBS) paradigm for the support of the TCP flows in an All Optical Network (AON). We analyze the TCP send rate, i.e. the amount of data sent per time unit, taking into account of: i) the burst assembly mechanism, called burstification process; ii) the burst loss events inside the OBS network. The goals of the paper are to investigate the effect ...

Role of Optical Network in ResilientIP Backbone Architecture

layer is the third component, the optical switch, which interconnects the core routers via a switched optical network layer over WDM links. While new high-availability (so-called “non-stop routing”) core routers provide service resiliency at the packet layer, the optical layer provides lowest cost and highest level of resiliency at the physical layer against catastrophic network events such as ...

Towards an IP-centric Optimization: On the Topology Design of WDM-mesh Networks

We investigate the topology design in IP backbone networks while exploiting both the advantages of IP routing and optical networking. The emerging WDM and optical switching technologies enable the use of optically switched circuits to interconnect routers, which may not have direct fiber links with each other, in an IP-over-WDM network. All these “light circuits” form the underlying topology of...

A Framework to Support IP over WDM Using Optical Burst Switching

Optical burst switching (OBS) has been proposed as a switching technique to exploit enormous amount of capacity provided by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission technology. In this paper, we consider a model for overlaying IP network over the OBS WDM transmission backbone. In the framework of this model, the functional requirements of the interface between the IP layer and the OB...
